Safdie Architects is seeking an engaging leader with expertise in creative, story-driven communications and direct involvement within the architecture and design realm.

With the recent relaunch of their website, Safdie Architects has provided key insights into the practice: defining the “first principles” that inform the development of the firm’s visionary work, introducing the individuals central to the firm’s success, and presenting their projects in greater detail.

Your mission will be to take this core material and run with it: evolving, elaborating, and extending the firm’s story and message through all marketing and positioning touchpoints. You should have a passion for excellence, a refined curatorial eye, strong written and visual communication skills, and hands-on willingness to do what it takes to get things done.

Key Relationships

You will work directly with the Principals, key leaders of the firm’s practice, and other members of the integrated marketing team to build a culture of communication, connection, and engagement, with an overarching strategy for the firm’s internal and external communications and voice. You should have a talent for eliciting collaboration and inspiring team members to contribute their best efforts.

In addition to the firm’s Principals, you will work directly with Moshe Safdie on communications initiatives that involve him, including interviews with the media, lectures, individual recognition, and monographs, as well as major project pursuits.

You will also work with the firm’s outside branding/design consultant (Pentagram) and media-relations consultant (Resnicow and Associates), as well as an external research specialist who is focused on short- and long-range outreach and opportunities for significant global civic and cultural projects.

Scope

Through the communications platform, you will foster the strategic growth of the firm’s portfolio by improving and elevating the firm’s approach and capabilities to research, qualify, pursue, win, and promote world-class opportunities and commissions.

One of the goals of this position is to reduce the day-to-day reliance on Principals for working-level guidance and development of content for marketing and business development materials.

You should be adept at telling stories about design and designing experiences that connect with a broad audience of people, including clients, influencers, and the general public.

You will craft strategies and provide active support to:

  • Enhance the brand equity of Safdie Architects, creating impact through higher visibility and focused messaging.
  • Shape compelling narratives that convey the firm’s distinctive vision, methodology, and relevance to clients, prospective clients, and the public at large.
  • Find new ways to connect with decision-makers and those who influence decisions on development of significant, high-potential projects within the global built environment.
  • Identify, build, and maintain new business and advocacy relationships to expand the firm’s reach.
  • Assess potential leads, evaluate project feasibility, and lead the proposal and qualifications processes — demonstrating good judgment throughout.
  • Build and sustain momentum, keeping an eye on the big picture while managing details and the day-to-day requirements of the role.

Criteria

  • The ability to write convincingly and edit critically, to think conceptually, and to convey complex ideas through both written and visual methods.
  • A genuine commitment, integrity, and passion for your work, and the confidence and self-discipline to succeed in a creative and dynamic environment.
  • Professional background that includes development of strong written and visual communications, general marketing experience, and the aptitude, motivation, and insights essential to foster client opportunities.
  • Experience in architecture and/or design, preferably with an award-winning, international “signature” practice.
  • Excellent planning, organization, and communication skills necessary to work collaboratively and to thrive in an open, collegial, and flexible environment.
  • An interest in and appreciation for new ways of working across a digital platform.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written); fluency in other languages is a plus.
