How to Empower Talent in Architecture
Our friends at Monograph — George Valdes and Chris Morgan — spoke to Marjanne Pearson for their virtual fireside chat series Best Practice, which is dedicated to practice operations at architecture and related design firms. Their conversation focused on how to empower talent in architecture.
Marjanne began with that morning’s The Mini Crossword from the New York Times, which just happened to have the words FORCE and POWER crossing. Her message was that we don’t want to force anyone to do anything. However, the real question is how we can make the force be with us in everything that we do. How can we take advantage of who we are, what we do, how we do it, and why it matters in order to have a more significant influence not only in our firms and the built environment, but also in our communities and our world.
She continued to talk about her particular interest in the power and agility of mid-sized firms — firms from 15 to 35 or larger — who may lack the resources of larger firms, but find ways to bring expertise into their firms and are able to operate at the level of firms with 75 to 100 people. She also made a case for practice operations as an “energy grid” — supporting “plug+play” energy that empowers everyone within the firm to do their best work.
Of course, there’s much more, including excellent questions from the audience. In case you missed the episode, Monograph has posted the video online.
Marjanne mentioned a number of resources — interviews, articles, and videos — that we will share in a Spotlight post. As an example, here’s a link to Monograph’s excellent episode with Flora Bao on How to Project-Manage Architecture.
